Orthodontic Emergencies

Trauma or injury to the face, mouth or teeth is an orthodontic emergency that requires immediate treatment. Infection or swelling of the face, mouth or gums or severe discomfort also requires immediate attention. In any of these situations, seek care right away from the dental office or emergency room.

If you experience a dental emergency, do not wait, call Linden Dental Associates at 908-486-5252.

Most orthodontic problems are more uncomfortable than dangerous, but comfortable matters when the poking wire is in your mouth. A small kit at home solves most of it: orthodontic wax from any pharmacy, a clean pair of tweezers, and the phone number of a team that answers. What turns a small problem into a bigger one is improvising with sharp objects or ignoring a break for weeks while teeth quietly drift.

Whether it is braces hardware or a cracked aligner, call 908-486-5252 and describe what happened. Many issues can be managed at home until a quick repair visit; we will tell you honestly which kind yours is.

Build a small ortho kit at home

Five items handle most orthodontic surprises: orthodontic wax from any pharmacy, clean tweezers, cotton swabs, a small mirror, and our phone number saved in your contacts. Wax covers poking wires and sharp brackets. Tweezers reposition a slipped ligature gently. The mirror helps you see what you are describing when you call us. Assemble the kit before you need it, keep it where the family knows, and half of orthodontic emergencies become minor Tuesday moments.

Braces care versus aligner care in a pinch

Braces problems are usually hardware problems: something poking, something loose, something swallowed harmlessly in a sandwich. Cover sharp edges, save loose pieces, and call. Aligner problems are usually fit problems: a cracked tray, a lost tray, a new tray that will not seat. The rule that solves most of them: wear the most recent tray that fits comfortably, never force a painful one, and call us before jumping ahead in your series. Both paths end the same way, with a quick visit that puts your treatment back on schedule.

When ortho trouble is actually urgent

Most orthodontic problems can wait for a convenient appointment, but a few cannot. Call the same day for: any injury to the mouth that moved a tooth or drew significant blood, a wire genuinely embedded in cheek or gum that wax cannot relieve, swelling or signs of infection around braces, or pain that over-the-counter relief does not touch. These situations get urgent-care treatment here, not orthodontic-appointment treatment, because tissue and teeth outrank hardware every time. Everything milder keeps until a scheduled repair, and our front desk will sort your situation into the right lane the moment you describe it: 908-486-5252.

Keep this page bookmarked if anyone in your family wears braces or aligners; calm instructions read best before they are needed. And keep the bigger truth in mind: nearly every orthodontic mishap is fixable, most within a single visit, and none of them undo the progress your smile has already made. Hardware hiccups are the toll of transformation. We handle them so you can keep going.

Wax on, worry off. Then call us.

Wire trouble? Wax first. Then call us. Easy fix.

Common questions

A wire is poking my cheek. What can I do right now?

Cover the end with orthodontic wax, or gently push it flat with the eraser end of a pencil. That protects your cheek until we can see you. Never cut a wire yourself.

My bracket broke or came loose. Is that urgent?

It is rarely a same-hour emergency, but do not wait long. Save any loose piece, cover sharp edges with wax, and call us to plan the repair.

My clear aligner cracked. Should I keep wearing it?

Wear the most recent aligner that still fits comfortably and call us. Do not jump ahead to the next set on your own; we will tell you the right move for your plan.
