Linden Dental Associates treats gum swelling, abscesses, and bleeding as true urgent care, with a periodontist on staff in Linden, NJ.
Injuries of soft tissues
Injuries and infections involving the soft tissues of the mouth may also require emergency treatment. The tissues of the gums, tongue, or cheek lining can be damaged by accidental bites, falls, sports injuries, and scalding liquids. They may also suffer injury from foreign bodies that become lodged below the gum line, and they can develop painful and potentially serious abscesses. A periodontal (gum) abscess is a pus-filled sac caused by an infection and is usually quite painful. Abscesses require immediate attention at the dental office.
Any injury to the soft tissues of the mouth should be rinsed with dilute salt water. If there is visible debris, it should be cleared. Bleeding can usually be controlled by pressing a clean, damp material to the area for 10-15 minutes. If this does not work, go to the emergency room immediately.
A foreign body lodged beneath the gum line can sometimes be gently worked out with dental floss or a toothpick. But if this can’t be accomplished easily, make a dental appointment, so the area does not become damaged and/or infected.
Gum emergencies hide in plain sight because they rarely announce themselves like a broken tooth does. A swelling that grew overnight, a pimple-like bump on your gum, a bad taste that will not leave: these are infection talking, and infection near your jaw is never a wait-and-see situation. The tissue around your teeth is close to important real estate, which is why we treat gum swelling with real urgency.
The good news is that treatment usually brings relief quickly once the source is addressed. Call 908-486-5252, describe what you see and feel, and we will get you in promptly, with a periodontist on our own team if the case needs one.
Why gum infections punch above their weight
An abscess is a pocket of infection, and infections near the jaw sit uncomfortably close to important anatomy. That is why dentistry treats significant gum swelling with real urgency rather than watchful waiting: the earlier treatment starts, the simpler it stays. Treating an abscess fast brings relief fast, often within a day. It also spares you the harder road. That road is an infection that spread while someone hoped it would not. Swelling is your body raising its hand. We answer raised hands the same day: 908-486-5252.
After treatment: keeping gums out of trouble
Once your emergency resolves, the follow-through matters: finish any prescribed care exactly as directed, keep the follow-up visit where we confirm the infection fully cleared, and let us address whatever underlying condition invited the trouble, often gum disease that deep cleaning can now treat calmly. Emergencies are excellent teachers when their lessons get applied. Most patients who complete the follow-through never see this particular problem again.
Your gums protect everything your smile stands on; when they raise an alarm, we answer it. Same-day care, specialist backup, and relief that starts with one call.
Healthy gums, calm nights, problem solved: that is where this page ends for every patient who calls in time.
